Tagging, mentioning, @ing… call it what you will, interacting with other people by including them in your posts is fundamental to the way social media works, but following a couple of best practices and social etiquette is key.

Who Should You Tag or Not Tag?

Who you tag on social media varies between posts and depends on the content. The most important part is that the accounts you tag are relevant! Do not tag people just to get them to look at your post. If you tag a ton of accounts this comes across as spam. Most likely that person will unfollow you or block your account if it gets to be overwhelming. In some cases, your account can get suspended completely if you're spamming mentions.

Mentions work a bit differently across all the channels. To learn more about these differences, click on a specific channel name above or scroll below.

Specifications of tagging/mentioning per social channel

LinkedIn Company Pages and LinkedIn Profiles

Type @ followed by the slug of the page. Matches for the text will be displayed in a dropdown below and you will need to click on an item inside the dropdown to confirm the mention. Once clicked, the text will transform into a mention (eg. @story-chief will be changed to StoryChief).

When a LinkedIn user has a paid LinkedIn account, their avatar will show when typing their slug.

❌ Limitation: Due to API restrictions, it is not possible to tag or mention personal profiles on a Personal Profile. This is a restriction from LinkedIn and therefore it's out of our control.

For Company Pages, it is possible to tag or mention page followers.

❌ Limitation: Due to API limitations the mention can only be triggered when exactly inputting the URL slug.

Example: To mention the Coca-Cola Company page, you need to type the stripes to @the-coca-cola-company as shown below:

Twitter

Start with @ and type the username, or search using the actual name or topic. For example, if you begin with @football, you will receive a list of football teams.

❌ Limitation: Tagging is possible for Twitter accounts that have previously mentioned you, but is limited to a single account per tweet. This is a limitation enforced by Twitter to prevent spammy and unsolicited mentions.

Facebook Pages

Type @ followed by the name of the page. Matches for your text will be displayed in a dropdown below and you will need to click on an item inside the dropdown to confirm the mention.

❌ Limitation: Due to API restrictions, it is not possible to tag or mention personal profiles and groups on Facebook. This is a restriction from Facebook and therefore it's out of our control.

Instagram

Type @ followed by the name of the page. In this case and as opposed to the other platforms, you won't find a dropdown of the handle of the company/profile you want to mention.

❌ Limitation: Due to API restrictions, there is no dropdown with the closest matches so it's important to type the exact handle you want to mention.

Once the social post is published through StoryChief, the mentioned account will become hyperlinked. There is a limit of 5 different accounts to mention within a social post.
