AI Visibility

Track when ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Google Search mention your brand, cite your content, or recommend competitors instead.

Written by Victor

More of your customers are asking an AI assistant instead of typing into a search bar, and the answer they get back decides whether your brand even enters the conversation. AI Visibility (also known as GEO, AI SEO, or answer engine optimization) monitors the questions your customers would realistically ask an AI assistant, and shows you whether the answers mention your brand, cite a page on your website, or point to a competitor instead. The result: a recurring, concrete picture of your brand's presence in AI-generated answers, so you know exactly where to focus your content.

StoryChief's AI drafts your starting set of monitored prompts from your company profile, audiences and content pillars. You review, edit and approve every prompt before anything is tracked, and you stay in control of the set at any time afterwards.

1. Introduction to AI Visibility

Glossary

  • AI platform: An AI assistant we check for mentions of your brand (ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Mode).

  • Citation: A link to your website that an AI includes as a source in its answer.

  • Competitor: A rival brand we spot showing up in your prompts' answers.

  • Content pillar: A core topic your company wants to be known for.

  • Coverage: How many of the AI platforms mentioned your brand for a prompt.

  • Cycle: One weekly check-in where all your prompts are re-asked and your scores refresh.

  • Improve AI Visibility: A button that asks StoryChief's AI agent to draft content that helps you show up better for a prompt.

  • Journey stage: Where in the buying process a prompt sits: Awareness, Consideration, Decision, or Brand evaluation.

  • Mention: Your brand's name appearing in an AI's written answer.

  • Prompt: A question written the way a real customer would ask an AI assistant.

  • Query fan-out: The extra searches an AI ran behind the scenes to answer your prompt.

  • Target audience: The type of person a prompt or content pillar is aimed at.

  • Visibility score: One overall number showing how visible your brand is across AI platforms.

2. Start tracking your AI Visibility

Step 1. In your dashboard, go to Report and click 'AI Visibility'.

Step 2. Click 'Start tracking'. StoryChief's AI reads your company profile, target audiences and content pillars, then drafts the questions your customers would realistically ask an AI assistant. This takes about 15-20 seconds.

Step 3. In the review dialogue, read through each drafted prompt. Edit the wording directly, or set its Journey stage (Awareness, Consideration, Decision, or Brand evaluation), Content pillar and Target audience.

Step 4. Remove any prompt you don't want with the trash icon, or click '+ Add prompt' to write your own.

🔔 Note: Nothing is saved until you confirm the set. Take the time to make sure every prompt reflects what your customers would actually ask. This baseline is what every later result gets measured against.

Step 5. Click 'Start monitoring [N] prompts' to save your set and begin tracking.

Your first check runs in the background and can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how many prompts you're monitoring. We'll email you as soon as your first results are ready.

❌ Limitation: Editing or adding a prompt after monitoring has started resets what that prompt can be compared against — trends from before and after the change won't be directly comparable.

2. Read your Overview

Once your first check completes, the Overview tab shows:

  • Visibility metrics

    • Visibility score: Percentage averaging three equally-weighted measures:

      • How many answers mention your brand

      • How many cite a page on your domain

      • How many of the monitored AI providers mention your brand

    • Mentioned: The average share of AI answers that mention your brand.

    • Cited: The average share of AI answers that include at least one citation to your domain.

  • Trend chart: your score, mention rate and citation rate over time, each with the change compared to the start of the selected period.

  • Top cited domains and URLs: The pages AI assistants cite most often when answering your monitored prompts.

  • Top competitors: The brands that show up most often alongside yours in the same answers.

Use the calendar picker at the top of the page to compare different checks. Only days with a completed check are selectable, since monitoring runs on a recurring weekly schedule rather than every day.

3. Manage your monitored prompts

The Prompts tab lists every prompt you're monitoring, when it was added, and its visibility.

Step 1. Go to AI Visibility -> Prompts.

Step 2. Click 'Add prompt' to monitor a new question.

Write it the way a customer would ask an AI assistant: a full question, not a list of keywords. Optionally set its journey stage, content pillar and target audience.

Step 3. To delete a prompt, click the prompt to open the sidebar and choose 'Edit prompt'. At the bottom of the sidebar, choose 'Delete prompt'.

🔔 Note: If your prompt count ends up above your plan's limit (for example, after a downgrade), monitoring pauses until you remove prompts or upgrade. Your existing graph history is kept either way.

A. What matters for a prompt?

Before all the tracking and optimizing, we mustn't forget the prompt itself. It all starts with the intention: "When do I want to get mentioned or cited?".

👉 Answering these questions will help you determine which elements to include in your prompts.

  • Awareness: The person recognizes a problem but may not know what solutions exist.

    • What problem or goal starts their search?

    • What event triggers them to look for help?

    • How would they describe the problem in their own words?

    • What are the consequences of not solving it?

    • Which of your content pillars does the problem eventually connect to?

  • Consideration: The person understands the problem and is comparing different types of solutions.

    • What kind of solution are they exploring?

    • What are they trying to achieve?

    • How are they framing their search?

    • What concerns might make them hesitate?

    • What matters most: cost, speed, effort, or doing it in-house versus outsourcing?

  • Decision: The person is close to choosing a product or provider.

    • What signals that they are ready to buy?

    • Which details, such as company size or industry, narrow their options?

    • What final concern could stop the purchase?

    • What does “best for me” mean in their own words?

    • What key message would give them confidence to choose?

  • Brand evaluation: The person is comparing your company with specific competitors.

    • Why would they consider or question your company?

    • Which competitors would they compare you with?

    • What message or advantage should that comparison test?

    • Who is the solution best suited for?

    • What concern about your brand are they trying to confirm or disprove?

4. Track your competitors

The Competitors tab shows which other brands show up in the same AI answers as yours, with a trend chart per brand and a full sortable list.

Step 1. Go to AI Visibility -> Competitors.

Step 2. Click any brand in the table to open its detail panel and see the prompts and answers where it was mentioned.

5. Use cases

  • Spot brand gaps early. See which of your customers' questions AI assistants currently answer without mentioning you at all, so you know which content pillars need attention.

  • Find your most-cited content. The top cited domains and URLs show which of your existing pages AI assistants already trust as a source. A signal for what to create more of.

  • Benchmark against competitors. Track which competitors get recommended in the same answers as your brand, and how that shifts week over week.
